A Law in Haste

This is the title under which the editor of the Tamil daily 'Dinamani' has questioned the wisdom of central government in bringing an ordinance for effecting amendments to the basic criminal laws of the country enabling  stringent punishment to those who commit heinous crimes against women like rape leading to death etc. I pity the position taken by this editor because he is the one who often keeps criticizing the Centre and its leaders for not taking a tough stand and quick action in very many matters.

But one would certainly support and appreciate the swift action initiated by the central government on the issue at hand. In fact we should admire the role played by the following dignitaries in taking prompt action in the wake of Nirbhaya's rape and murder in the capital Delhi during December, 2012.

Smt Sonia Gandhi
Shri Rahul Gandhi
Dr Manmohan Singh
Mr Justice J.S.Verma
Shri Pranab Mukherjee

They have done a wonderful job in the shortest possible time reversing the usual accusation of Indian set-up being a Banana Republic. Similar actions need to be in place on several such issues facing the country right now.
